Year 6 Autumn Term 1 Theme

Dear Parents/Carers

Our first theme of the year is called ‘Game Designer’. During this theme, we will be focusing on Science and DT.

We will begin the theme by learning about electricity in Science, we will learn to associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit, compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, and use and recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram. We will do this through a number of planned scientific investigations in which we will make predictions, record data and draw conclusions.

In DT, we will be making a buzz wire game. We will research and develop designs, make and evaluate our game using technical vocabulary throughout.

In English, we will be looking at persuasive speech and writing a portal story. Our core text will be The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S Lewis.

In oracy lessons and dialogic talk sessions, we will listen and respond appropriately to adults and their peers, consider and evaluate different viewpoints, and speak audibly and fluently with an increasing command of Standard English. This will link with our English work on persuasive speech and use it to sell out finished buzz wire game.

Part of the theme will involve us making potato batteries and playing board games. From our activity passport, we will take part in a lantern making workshop and parade our lanterns in Lister Park. We will also make a speech to sell our buzz wire game.

In RE, we will be asking - Why are there different beliefs about God? Then in PSHE, we will be learning how to care for our environment and how to learn a healthy lifestyle. In our French topic C’est Moi, we will learn how to talk about ourselves and our computing focus is information literacy. In PE, will be practicing for the Year 6 Frisbee competition in October.
