Year 4 Autumn Term 1 Theme

Dear Parents/Carers

Our first theme of the year in Year 4 is called ‘Natural Disasters’. During this theme, we will be focusing on Science, Geography, Art, Design Technology and Music.

In English, we will be looking at diary entries linking to a disaster story based on our core text ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit.

In Maths, we will be focusing on place value and addition and subtraction.

We will begin the theme with Science work, where we will be comparing and grouping materials together according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases. We will also be conducting experiments to observe how some materials change state when they are heated or cooled. Additionally, we will study the water cycle and link our findings back to changing states.

In Geography, we will be investigating key aspects of physical geography including volcanoes and earthquakes.

Throughout the theme, we will be looking at ways to link in our Art and Design Technology work. In Art, we will be looking at the works of Hokusia and creating pastel art work. In Design Technology we will be using balsa wood to build, strengthen and reinforce structures.

In Oracy lessons and dialogic talk sessions, we will be articulating and justifying our answers, arguments and opinions. We will also be listening and responding appropriately to adults and our peers.

Part of the theme will involve us experiencing a visit from the Environment Agency. We will also complete some of our Activity Passport challenges including making a sculpture with natural materials, making a den and taking part in a treasure hunt.

During R.E. lessons, we will be looking at different religions and focusing on using the correct terminology when talking or writing about special places, days, rituals and objects.

Computing lessons will focus on safeguarding and information literacy.

In P.E., Year 4 will be playing competitive games and applying basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.

Additionally, Year 4 are very excited to be taking part in weekly trumpet lessons on Wednesday afternoon!
