Year 3 Autumn Term 2 Theme

Dear Parents/Carers

Our next topic is an exciting scientific based theme called ‘May the force be with you’. In this topic we will focus on science and DT.

In English, we will be reading and writing warning stories, we will use drama to help understand characters and settings. We will also be looking at poems and have a go at performing, presenting and writing our own. Our core text is ‘Danny the Champion of the World’ this is a superb novel written by Roald Dhal which children absolutely love!

Through scientific discussions we will explore types of magnets; we will carry out experiments and evaluate our findings. We will also look at the different poles on a magnet and test to see which sides attract and repel from each other. Further to this, we will be carrying out some exciting experiments to test friction on various surfaces and draw conclusions from our predictions.

In DT, we will be creating our very own moving, pop out box to present our completed poem. To do this we will using levers and linkages to allow pictures to appear. This will take careful planning and will allow us to perform a number of practical tasks such as cutting, shaping, joining and finishing accurately.

In PHSE, we will be looking at our health and wellbeing. We will have a huge focus on healthy lifestyles and with our daily mile well established in our daily routine this will be a great topic to discuss and explore further.

For music, we will be using a selection of musical instruments to aid with sound effects for when we perform our poems. We will also be very busy towards the end of this topic learning Christmas songs ready to perform in front of our wonderful audience.

In oracy and dialogic talk sessions, we will be using the language of retelling to gain, maintain and monitor the interest of the listeners. We will be finding opportunities to present our stories and poems to other classes across school which should help us practice some of out talk rules such as projecting our voices and making eye contact.

In R.E, they will continue to explore the questions; What do different people believe about God? We will continue to focus on Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

In computing, we will be focusing on Digital Media children will recognise the key features of different types of information/genres and use appropriate layouts. They will have a chance to plan and create a simple animation.

Finally, in French, they will continue practising their vocabulary in words and phrases related to C’est Moi! They will be able to listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
