Frizinghall Primary School

Year 1 Spring 1 Theme

Dear Parents/Carers

Our theme this half term is called ‘Are We Nearly There Yet?”. During this theme, we will be focusing on Geography, Science and DT.

In English, we will be reading and learning about the story ‘On the Way Home’ and as part of this children will be writing about journeys that they have been on.

We will begin the theme with geography, we be learning to name the countries in the United Kingdom and be able to name their capital cities. On a walk around Frizinghall we will be learning about physical geography and human geography then we will be sorting different pictures of them with our partner.

We will talk about journeys we have been on and discuss what type of transport we used to get there. We will carry out a transport survey to find out the most common form of transport in Frizinghall. As part of the theme topic we will go on our own journey by train to the bus museum in Keighley.

In dialogic talk lessons we will be articulating and justify our answers, arguments and opinions, e.g. debating which is our favourite form of transport and why.

In Science, we will be learning to name different types of materials and discuss the properties of each material. We will carry out our own investigation to find out which material would be the most suitable for the roof of a car.

In DT we will be designing, making and evaluating vehicles. We will discuss which materials we could use to make our vehicles and after we have made them we will discuss what we can do to improve them.

Helping at home:

As well as ensuring that your child completes their weekly homework, you could:

  • Read with your child regularly.
  • Register your child at the local library.
  • Ask your child which their favourite vehicle is and ask them to explain why.
  • Talk about any journeys you have been on together. Discuss how you got there, who you went with, where you went and what you do.

Go on a materials hunt around your house. Ask your child to find something made of wood, plastic or fabric.
