Frizinghall Primary School

Year 1 Autumn 2 Theme

Dear Parents/Carers

Our theme this half term is called ‘What do we do in winter?”. During this theme, we will be focusing on Science, DT and Music.

In English, we will be reading and learning about the story ‘Owl Babies’ and the Owl Man will be visiting our school so that we can see and find out about different types of owls.

We will begin the theme with science work, we will be using observational skills to observe and record the weather. We will describe the changes in the weather across the seasons. We will be going for a walk around Lister Park to look for evidence of the changing seasons.

In Music we will be listening to ‘The Four Seasons’ by Vivaldi and discussing how this music makes us feel.

In dialogic talk lessons we will be articulating and justify our answers, arguments and opinions, e.g. debating which is our favourite season of the year and why.

In DT we will be designing and making some pop up Christmas cards.

We will also be really busy rehearsing our Christmas production and using our voices to sing expressively. We will be playing tuned and untuned instruments to accompany some of the songs from the School Christmas Production.

Helping at home:

As well as ensuring that your child completes their weekly homework, you could:

  • Read with your child regularly
  • Talk to your child about which is your favourite season
  • Register your child at the local library
  • Walk to Lister Park and talk about the changes you can see.
