Science

At Frizinghall Primary School, our mission is to ignite curiosity and foster a love for exploration among our young learners in primary science, with a strong emphasis on disciplinary knowledge (working scientifically) and substantive knowledge. We believe that engaging students in hands-on, enquiry-based activities lays the foundation for a lifelong interest in science, encouraging them to become active participants in their learning journey.

Enquiry-based learning is central to the teaching of our science curriculum. We design lessons that encourage students to become active explorers rather than passive recipients of knowledge. For instance, when studying plants in Year 2, students might participate in a project where they plant seeds, monitor their growth, and investigate the conditions necessary for healthy development. This hands-on approach allows them to engage with scientific concepts while building essential skills in observation, data collection, and analysis.

Working Scientifically

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In EYFS, children develop early scientific understanding through the ‘Understanding the World’ area of the EYFS Curriculum. It is introduced through activities that encourage every child to explore, problem solve, observe, predict, think, make decisions and talk about the world around them.
