Reception Autumn Term 1 Theme

Dear Parents/Carers

During the first half term your child will be settling into school and becoming increasingly independent in both the indoor and outdoor environments.

The first story we will be learning is ‘Elmer’. We will be learning about different colours, different animals and where they live, how to be good friends and about similarities and differences between each other. This leads into our theme ‘All About Me’, where we will be finding out about our families, where we live and our local area, and what we like to do best. Watch out for requests for family photographs!

We will be starting daily Phonics Lessons, learning the sound each letter makes and learning to write it correctly. We will send home letter sounds to practise once they have been taught.

In Mathematics we will be concentrating on counting in a wide range of contexts and recognising numbers.

Helping at home

  • Read, read, read to your child! Sharing stories together is the most important thing you can do at this stage. (During this half term your child will start to bring home a library book each week.)
  • Practise counting all sorts of things: plates on the table, cups in the cupboard, the number of stairs to go up to bed, how many cars you walk past on your way to school, etc.
  • Talk to your child about the colour of different things in the world around them.
  • Finally, please teach your child to put on their coat and fasten it. (We will play outside whatever the weather).

As the children settle into Reception please be patient as they start to learn new routines and learn to be more independent. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to come and talk to one of the Reception Team.

Thank you

Miss Bower and Mrs Haigh
