Music

The music curriculum at Frizinghall Primary School ensures that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
  • Learn to sing and use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others.
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated including through the elements of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

The Musical Elements Knowledge Mat

The Frizinghall music curriculum is underpinned by: the whole school SCARF values, the development of musical skills, set within the context of the knowledge to be acquired.  It is enhanced by experiences, including visits and visitors, musical links in the activity passports and active learning opportunities.

Each year group will learn to: use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes, playing tuned and untuned instruments musically, listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high quality live and recorded music and experimenting with, creating, selecting and combining sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.

Each year group follows a curriculum map, which teaches different subjects through a variety of themes.  Music is taught alongside some of these themes and it has been mapped across the school to ensure that children have the opportunity to revisit and build on past learning.

In addition, each year group will either teach music using the Charanga website or they will learn to play a musical instrument. The key musical vocabulary is taught during each unit of work and revisited regularly. These instruments include; bamboo tamboo (year 2), recorders, (year 3), trumpets (year 4) and ukulele (year 5).

We hope that children will become inspired to listen to a variety of music and that they will enjoy being introduced to a wide range of musical instruments throughout their time at Frizinghall Primary School. There will be lots of opportunities for children to share their experiences through performances to parents and to the rest of the school.
