French

At Frizinghall Primary School, learning French opens the door to a broader understanding of the world, encouraging pupils to appreciate diverse cultures and languages. The French curriculum is designed to foster curiosity, develop communication skills, and provide the foundation for learning additional languages in the future. Pupils are taught to express their thoughts, ideas, and responses in French, both orally, in writing and whilst reading, building their confidence and ability to communicate in real-world situations.

French lessons are carefully structured to enable children to understand and respond to spoken and written language from various authentic sources. Pupils are encouraged to speak with increasing fluency and spontaneity, learning how to ask questions, engage in conversations, and express opinions in French. They also develop accurate pronunciation and intonation through engaging activities like songs, rhymes, and interactive games. As they progress, pupils learn to read and appreciate stories, poems, and non-fiction texts in French, expanding their cultural knowledge.

We use the La Jolie Ronde scheme to deliver French lessons, which provides non-language specialist teachers with a clear framework to support their teaching. This scheme focuses on developing phonics, vocabulary, and grammar through a sequence of engaging, age-appropriate lessons. It ensures that children regularly revisit and practise the language in different contexts, allowing them to internalise key structures and words. The curriculum also includes immersive experiences like Now Press Play, and pupils are encouraged to engage with French outside of lessons through reading French books and completing homework via Purple Mash.

Through this approach, French at Frizinghall enables pupils to become confident speakers and writers of the language, while deepening their cultural understanding and appreciation. This curriculum not only supports the development of language skills but also empowers pupils to navigate and appreciate the global community they are part of.
