Essence of Design Technology
Design Technology (DT) at Frizinghall Primary School fosters creativity, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving. Pupils engage in a hands-on, imaginative process where they design and produce functional, innovative products that meet real-world needs. This subject empowers children to explore how technology, engineering, mathematics, and art come together to solve complex problems, preparing them for future challenges. DT inspires pupils to be resourceful, collaborative, and independent thinkers, ready to take risks, evaluate their work, and continually improve their designs.
At the heart of Design Technology is the development of key skills in designing, making, and evaluating. Pupils begin by identifying a problem or need and, using a variety of materials and tools, create a solution. This may involve working with textiles, wood, food, or digital media. They learn to plan, build prototypes, and refine their ideas through testing and feedback, often working both independently and as part of a team. In the process, pupils gain vital technical knowledge—such as understanding structures, mechanisms, and electrical systems—while developing practical skills like measuring, cutting, and assembling materials.
An important aspect of Design Technology is learning from the past and present. Pupils study influential designers, innovations, and technologies, reflecting on how these have shaped the modern world. This gives them a broader cultural perspective, helping them understand the impact of design and technology on society, economics, and the environment. Through this, they cultivate the ability to think critically and make informed decisions about their own designs.
The Frizinghall DT curriculum encourages children to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process. Pupils are taught to be resilient and adaptable, finding creative solutions to challenges. Whether designing a bridge or preparing a meal, students are guided to assess risks, follow safe working practices, and evaluate their outcomes.
In DT, pupils at Frizinghall Primary School become confident, inventive, and capable individuals, equipped with the skills and mindset needed for lifelong learning and future careers. To support pupils to develop their knowledge of the DT process, we use knowledge organisers based on the ACCESSFM model.
